The Effect of Sunlight on Human Epidermis

A Quantitative Electron Microscopic Study of Dendritic Cells

Alvin S. Zelickson, MD; Jess Mottaz, BS

Arch Dermatol. 1970;101(3):312-315.

Abstract

Qualitative as well as quantitative studies, including direct counting of cells and linear scanning of electron micrographs, to determine volume ratios for epidermal dendritic cells revealed an increase in melanocyte number and an essential absence of Langerhans' cells following two weeks of daily ultraviolet irradiation. These findings suggest some form of relationship between the melanocyte and the Langerhans' cell.
