Abstract
Studies by indirect immunofluorescent test and by electron microscopy were performed in an active clinical case of pemphigus vegetans. The presence of antibodies against epithelial intercellular substances was shown in dilutions between 1:10 and 1:160 of the patient's serum. Important changes occurring in the tonofilament-desmosome complexes were suggested by the ultrastructural studies. Migration of eosinophils from dermis to epidermis through damaged basement membrane was frequently observed. It is suggested that antigen-antibody complexes, located in the intercellular spaces of the affected epidermis, might represent a persistent attracting stimulus for eosinophils and cause the typical "microabscesses."
