Abstract
Titers of antibody detected in serum samples from patients with pemphigus detected by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) were compared to the clinical activity of the disease process in 17 patients, with use of an extract of normal human epidermis as the source of antigen. Patients in remission (eight cases) showed low titers, those having severe activity (four cases) showed high titers, while patients with mild activity (five cases) showed intermediate values. In nine patients, estimation of antibody titer was repeated at a later date and the same relationship was discovered. Two patients showing low titers during the phase of clinical activity went into the remission phase and in two other patients, a rise in antibody titer was observed one to two weeks earlier than a clinical relapse.
