Cutaneous Manifestations of Leprechaunism

Sanford I. Roth, MD; Heinrich K. Schedewie, MD; Victoria K. Herzberg, PhD; Jerrald Olefsky, MD; M. Joycelyn Elders, MD; Arthur Rubenstein, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1981;117(9):531-535.

Abstract

• Three patients who had leprechaunism were noted to have cutaneous alterations consistent with acanthosis nigricans. In addition, these patients had hypertrichosis and dysplastic nails. The biochemical hallmarks of this disease are hyperinsulinemia and fasting hypoglycemia. The biochemical findings and an abnormality of insulin binding may be the basis for the development of these characteristic cutaneous lesions.
