Norman Goldstein, MD, FACP

Arch Dermatol. 1985;121(5):604-605.

Abstract

Tattoo, Tat't'aow, Tattow, Tatoo, Tatto, Tatu, Ta Tau (Polynesian): To perform permanent marks or designs upon the skin by puncturing it and inserting a pigment or pigments: Practiced by various tribes of low cultures; and by individuals in civilized countries.

Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary

Lydia oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia

Lydia the tattooed lady?

She has eyes that men adore so

And a torso even more so

Lydia, oh Lydia

That encyclopedia

Lydia the queen of tattoos

On her back is the battle of Waterloo

Beside it the wreck of the Hesperus II

And proudly above waves the red white and blue

You can learn a lot from Lydia.
