Hyperthyroidism, Pretibial Myxedema, and Clubbing

Review of Syndrome and Report of a Case Treated Locally with TSH and Triiodothyronine

FREDERICK D. MALKINSON, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1963;88(3):303-312.

Abstract

The syndrome of hyperthyroidism, exophthalmos, pretibial myxedema, clubbing, and osteoarthropathy is reviewed, and an additional case reported. Current concepts of the pathogenesis of the disease manifestations in this syndrome are discussed.

Observations on the local treatment of pretibial myxedema with triiodothyronine and thyrotropin (TSH) are described for this patient, and possible mechanisms for the therapeutic effects are considered.
