Patterns of Porphyria in the American Negro
ISRAEL ZELIGMAN, MD
Arch Dermatol. 1963;88(5):616-626.
Abstract
Two cases of acute porphyria in American Negroes are reported. These two patients were not as severely involved as most of our white patients with this disorder.
Four American Negro patients with porphyria cutanea tarda are reported. Their manifestations are contrasted with those in whites and Bantus. They exhibited hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, and scleroderma but had no evidence of blisters. Two, followed for at least 12 years, lost their clinical manifestations spontaneously, and the laboratory tests performed for porphyria also became negative.
