Polymorphous Light Eruption

A Ten-Year Follow-Up and Evaluation

MILTON M. CAHN, MD; EDWIN J. LEVY, MD; BERTRAM SHAFFER, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1963;88(6):756-758.

Abstract

Eleven patients with polymorphous light eruption who were first studied in 1952-1953 were restudied and reevaluated for this tenyear follow-up report. These patients continued to develop yearly exacerbations of polymorphous light eruption but did not show any progression either clinically or by laboratory studies during this time, indicative of lupus erythematosus.

On the basis of these findings, we cannot substantiate the hypothesis that polymorphous light eruption and systemic lupus erythematosus may be different facets of the same disease and that some patients with polymorphous light eruption might eventually progress to systemic lupus erythematosus.
