The Myth of the Sebaceous Cyst

A. M. KLIGMAN, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1964;89(2):253-256.

Abstract

Arguments are presented to show that the sebaceous cyst is nonexistent. It is a variety of keratinous cyst. The cysts usually given this name are lined not by sebaceous but by keratinizing cells resembling those of the buccal mucosa. Hardened cell membranes are not formed. The fragile cells therefore break, liberating the horny contents.
