Lichen Planus-like Eruption Caused by Color Developer

The Topical Action of 3-Methyl-4-Amino-N-Diethyl-Aniline-Monohydrochloride (CD-2) on the Skin

ERIK A. KNUDSEN, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1964;89(3):357-359.

Abstract

Twenty-nine randomly selected eczema patients were patch-tested for 48 hours with a 25% aqueous solution of CD-2. Two patients (one of whom also was found to be allergic to paraphenylenediamine) became sensitized to CD-2. Among seven patients with known paraphenylenediamine allergy, one was also allergic to CD-2. An additional three patients with lichenoid eruption after contact with CD-2 were tested with 1% aqueous solution of CD-2 for 48 hours, both on intact skin and on skin from which the horny layer had been removed. In none of the total of six patients allergic to CD-2 were any lichenoid changes produced by the testing.

In six patients with lichen planus, daily painting of the skin with 25% aqueous solution of CD-2 for up to four weeks resulted in no deterioration of the existing condition.
