Abstract
Nineteen new cases of pemphigus foliaceus are added to the 55 previously reported in 1961 to give a more comprehensive picture of the disease. It appears that pemphigus foliaceus is the same, whether the reaction is generalized or localized, so that the terms "pemphigus erythematosus" or "Senear-Usher syndrome" are no longer needed. The histologic findings in the skin in all forms remain distinctive although older lesions may present features resembling pemphigus vulgaris. Pemphigus foliaceus is a benign disease of long duration that responds to treatment with the corticosteroids and from which the patient may eventually recover. At times, no treatment is required for the management of patients with relatively few lesions. Jamarsan paint is useful in some cases. The value of the antimalarials is debatable. Systemic steroids suppress the cutaneous flares and improve general well-being, but long-term steroid therapy usually is not indicated.
