Basophil Degranulation

Following Inhalation of Coal Tar Vapor

HERBERT M. PARNES, MD; WALTER B. SHELLEY, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1965;91(1):56-57.

Abstract

A case report of coal tar hypersensitivity is presented. The clinical picture was one of psoriatic erythroderma. Confirmation of this hypersensitivity was demonstrated by observing morphologic changes in the circulating basophil following inhalation of crude coal tar vapor. Three control subjects showed no response to a similar challenge. The significance of the absolute basophil count is discussed.
