Misleading Mascara Patch Tests

ERNST EPSTEIN, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1965;91(6):615-616.

Abstract

Certain liquid as well as a few cream-type mascaras produced false-positive primary irritant reactions when patch-tested under an occlusive covering. These misleading irritant reactions are apparently caused by solvents and can be avoided by using nonocclusive patch tests.
