Abstract
Heparin precipitable fraction (HPF) was assayed in 82 patients with various diseases (79 had some dermatologic manifestations and 24 were controls). Seventeen of the patients had elevated levels of HPF and 65 patients and all controls had normal levels of HPF. Fourteen of the 17 patients with elevated HPF levels had vascular diseases, predominantly of the necrotizing vasculitis type; whereas two patients had psoriasis and arthritis, and one patient had erythema multiforme. Elevated levels of HPF were indicative of systemic disease, usually of a serious nature, but normal levels of HPF did not exclude serious systemic disease. Elevation of the HPF level did not occur in patients with disease limited to the skin. No correlation was found between the HPF levels and the degree of fibrinoid vascular change seen in biopsy specimens of skin.
