Alopecia Areata and Cataract

A Slit-lamp Study

R. SUMMERLY, MRCP; D. M. WATSON, FRCS; P. W. MONCKTON COPEMAN, MRCP

Arch Dermatol. 1966;93(4):411-412.

Abstract

Fifty-eight patients with alopecia areata have been examined with a slit-lamp. Symptomless punctate lens opacities were found in nine patients (17%). Similar lens changes occurred in four of 20 control patients (20%) with normal vision.

As the significance of minor lens changes in alopecia areata is difficult to determine, we do not advocate routine slit-lamp examinations in these patients.
