The Basement Membrane in Relation to Carcinoma of the Skin

EDWARD P. CAWLEY, MD; Y. T. HSU, MD; PEYTON E. WEARY, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1966;94(6):712-715.

Abstract

The histochemically demonstrable basement membrane marking the epidermaldermal junction is usually normal in the epidermal carcinomas in situ, whereas in the invasive epidermoid carcinomas it is, in most instances, severely disrupted. However, nests of invading cells and metastatic foci in lymph nodes may show basement membranes, so that presence or absence of the structure is not an absolute criterion for invasiveness.
