Prominent Pigmented Papillae of the Tongue

Burton S. Koplon, MD; Harry J. Hurley, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1967;95(4):394-396.

Abstract

Prominent pigmented papillae of the tongue are described in a healthy 26-year-old Negro woman. The surface anatomy of the tongue and the pathologic variations of the lingual papillae are briefly reviewed. In accordance with previous studies we found pigmentation of the fungiform papillae in only a small percentage of Negroes, although the incidence (0.4%) of this finding in our series was even lower than had been cited before. Pigmentation of the fungiform papillae was not observed in 200 white patients examined.
