Abstract
The examination of the morphology of Mycobacterium leprae found in acid-fast stained sections of tissue specimens has been demonstrated to yield a reasonably precise estimate of the morphological index (MI) which compares well with the estimate of the MI made from smears of homogenates of the same tissue specimens. The method of examination is described and the value of such an examination is illustrated by its application to several clinical situations. The study of bacterial morphology in sections of tissues of patients with lepromatous leprosy is a procedure which yields valuable information and which should be carried out routinely in the examination of such tissues.
