Multiple Extramedullary Plasmacytomas

Howard A. Levin, MD; Robert G. Freeman, MD; Frank E. Smith, MD; Montague Lane, MD

Arch Dermatol. 1967;96(4):456-461.

Abstract

A 46-year-old man having multiple myeloma developed cutaneous nodules and large cervical and mediastinal extramedullary plasmacytomas while being treated with phenylalanine mustard. The tumors progressed to a size producing tracheal and superior vena caval obstruction and spinal cord compression. They responded to phenylalanine mustard and radiation therapy. The myeloma cells were best identified by examination of Wright-stained smears obtained by needle aspiration of the tumor nodules.
