Effect of Antibiotics on the Nasal Flora in Acne Patients

Richard R. Marples, BM, MSc; James E. Fulton, MD; James Leyden, MD; Kenneth J. McGinley

Arch Dermatol. 1969;99(6):647-651.

Abstract

The nasal flora was studied quantitatively in 14 patients receiving antibiotics for acne, 17 other acne patients, and 24 patients without acne not on antibiotics. Antibiotic treated acne patients more often carried enterobacteria (71%) and had diminished numbers of S aureus and lipophilic diphtheroids in the nose. The reciprocal relationship between S aureus carriage and carriage of enterobacteria was confirmed.
