THIS ISSUE of the ARCHIVES presents an ideal opportunity to review 2 important topics in cutaneous oncology: the use of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for skin cancer excision and the management of primary basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In their study, Thissen et al1 attempt to compare the effectiveness of 7 treatment modalities for primary BCC. While their study confirms much of what we already know, the authors raise important questions about our assumptions regarding the demonstrable effectiveness of these modalities. Likewise, in the article by Rosai,2 he stimulates discussion about the histopathological skills of surgeons who perform MMS. A critical analysis of the article by Thissen et al1 interestingly converges with concepts of treatment efficacy addressed by Rosai.2
