Localized Interferon Alfa-2bInduced Alopecia

Abnormalities of hair growth such as eyelash hypertrichosis1 and telogen effluvium2 may result from use of interferon alfa (IFN- ). In addition, localized injection site reactions may include vasculitis and cutaneous necrosis.3 We report subcutaneous injection site alopecia in 3 patients receiving interferon alfa-2b for chronic hepatitis C as part of an institutional review boardapproved treatment protocol. To our knowledge, this side effect of interferon alfa-2b is previously unreported.
Report of Cases
Case 1
A 45-year-old man presented with asymptomatic hair loss on his thighs limited to sites of subcutaneous interferon alfa-2b injections which he had begun 3 months earlier (5 x106 U 7 times a week for 4 weeks, followed by 5 x106 U 3 times a week).
