Walker and Johnstone performed a systematic review to assess the effectiveness and safety of topical and systemic drug treatments for scabies. The Cochrane Library extended search strategy for identifying trials was used to search the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group trial registry, the Cochrane Controlled Clinical Trials Registry, MEDLINE, Embase, military records, traditional medicine databases, and contacting international specialist centers and drug manufacturers. Randomized trials of any drug treatment for scabies were selected for review. The diagnostic criteria for scabies of the included studies varied from clinical diagnosis (based on history, sites of lesions, and the presence of typical burrows) to visualizing mites extracted from burrows or microscopic confirmation demonstrating mites, ova, or scabala.
