INTRODUCTION

The aim of the Cochrane Skin Group (CSG), which is part of the Cochrane Collaboration, is to assist reviewers by producing a comprehensive register containing international reports of controlled clinical trials (CCTs) that have been conducted in dermatology since 1948. The CSG was registered in Nottingham, England, in 1997 and was introduced to readers of the ARCHIVES in December 1998.1

Hand searching is the task of manually searching hard copies of journals for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). It is the means by which the Cochrane Collaboration aims to eventually gather reports of all clinical trials that have been conducted worldwide. Hand searching may pick up important clinical trials that have been published as letters, as conference proceedings, and in journals not listed in MEDLINE or EMBASE.
