Examination of Regional Lymph Nodes by Sentinel Node Biopsy and Molecular Analysis Provides New Staging Facilities in Primary Cutaneous Melanoma Blaheta H-J, Ellwanger U, Schittek B, Sotlar K, Maczey E, Breuninger H, Thelen MH, Bueltmann B, Rassner G, Garbe C J Invest Dermatol. 2000;114:637-642
Blaheta et al conducted a prospective cohort study on 116 patients with newly diagnosed primary cutaneous melanoma greater than or equal to 0.9 mm in Breslow depth. No patients showed evidence of metastatic disease and all underwent sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy.
The objective of the study was to assess the utility of using molecular analysis for detection of submicroscopic melanoma cells in SLNs to improve the accuracy of tumor staging. Patients were followed up for a mean of 19 months (range, 2-35 months).
All 116 patients received preoperative lymphoscintigraphy to evaluate the pathways of lymphatic drainage . . . [Full Text of this Article] Editors' Comment
