We read with interest the article by Bachelez et al1 in which a pathological role of Propionibacterium acnes in lesions of sarcoidosis is supported by quantitative polymerase chain reaction studies of lymph nodes in affected patients. Interestingly, P acnes has been shown to be serologically and biochemically identical to Corynebacterium parvum, a potent stimulator of the reticuloendothelial system.2 Additionally, Propionibacterium species have been found within cholesterol gallstones by nested primer polymerase chain reaction studies,3 and an association with allergic alveolitis and pulmonary angiitis has been found by experimental intravenous challenge.4
We offer 2 comments. First, this serves as another example as to why Koch's original postulates have been revised. Robert Koch was a microbiologist who, over one hundred years ago, discovered methods for the production of solid nutrient media and the ability to isolate pure cultures of microorganisms.
