What is the cost of atopic dermatitis in children? Emerson RM, Williams HC, Allen BR Br J Dermatol. 2001;143:514-522
The objective of this article was to estimate
the cost of atopic dermatitis. Emerson et al restricted their cross-sectional survey to children younger than 5 years and itemized
the costs to families, the health service, and the state. A postal questionnaire
was sent to all parents of children aged 1 to 5 years
who were registered with 4 general practices in the Nottingham, England, area
to identify those with atopic dermatitis. A second questionnaire was sent
to families of affected children to determine their utilization of medical
services and the financial costs.
The results showed a 12-month prevalence of
atopic dermatitis was estimated to be 16.5%. Over a 1-year period, the mean
