I became a physician because I wanted to do useful work, use my intellect,
use my hands, interact with people, and serve a nobler cause than just making
money. Coming from a medical family, I also saw from daily observation how
satisfying a career it was. I became a dermatologist after overcoming 2 obstacles
to that choice: (1) I had to admit to myself that "blood and guts" medicine
with people's lives on the line and middle-of-the-night crises were not for
me and (2) I had to do what my father suggested.
After over 25 years in private practice, I wanted to do something different:
volunteer abroad to use my skills for the benefit of less fortunate people.
After much searching I found an opportunity to volunteer for only 2 weeks
