A comparison of oral and topical corticosteroids in patients with bullous pemphigo Joly P, Roujeau JC, Benichou J, et al N Engl J Med. 2002;346:321-327
Joly and colleagues have conducted a clinical trial that has important implications for the management of patients with bullous pemphigoid. The study was a multicenter, randomized, nonblinded trial in which patients were stratified based on the severity of disease and clinical center prior to randomization. The study population consisted of consecutive patients with bullous pemphigoid based on clinical features, a subepidermal blister on skin biopsy, and linear deposits of IgG and C3 along the basement membrane zone. Patients were excluded if there was predominant or exclusive mucous membrane involvement, or if the patient had been treated with oral or topical corticosteroids, dapsone, or immunosuppressive drugs in the previous 6 months.
