Left Elizabeth, NJ, as an adolescent, for Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.


Education & Training:
Pre-Med at Princeton; Med at Columbia; Derm at Columbia, Penn, and Harvard; Dermpath at Harvard.


Why Dermpath:
Considered psychiatry, but did not want to be a psychoanalyst. Fondness for things morphologic, especially art, led to dermatology. An affinity for the microscope coupled with the realization that dermatopathologists could resolve quandaries vexing to clinicians led to dermatopathology.


Major Influences:
Carl Truman Nelson, at Columbia, exemplified professionalism and high standards; Arcady Ryvlin, at Mt Sinai in Miami Beach, typified Virchowian pathology at its best; Wally Clark at Harvard was unique in his day for his conception of pathologic processes in skin; Morris Leider at NYU personified love of language.
