As we search the past for inspiration and look over the horizon to gain a fresh perspective on dermatology, the monthly journal in our mailbox or on our computer gives us the scientific advances relevant to our practices and provides a forum for our discourse. The Archives of Dermatology, which has been in continuous publication since October 1882, gives its readers a monthly update on the specialty and over the sweep of time documents the evolution of the specialty (Table 1).¹ From its inception, dermatology and other organ-based specialties such as ophthalmology, otolaryngology, urology, and obstetrics and gynecology enjoyed an eclectic medical and surgical approach to treatment. Today, sophisticated scientific investigation helps develop and test the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment in medical and surgical dermatology, pediatric and geriatric dermatology, and oncologic and aesthetic dermatologic surgery.
