Commentary on: Methotrexate versus cyclosporine in moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis Heydendael VM, Spuls PI, Opmeer BC, et al N Engl J Med. 2003;349:658-665
Question: In patients with chronic plaque psoriasis, does treatment with cyclosporine or methotrexate lead to higher rates of clearance, and what toxic effects are associated with each treatment? Design: Heydendael and colleagues conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness and side effects of methotrexate and cyclosporine and the quality of life they provide. Setting: Patients were recruited from the Department of Dermatology of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and other dermatologic centers in the Netherlands between October 1998 and June 2000. Patients: Eligible patients were18 years or older; had moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis, defined by a score of at least 8 on the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI); an insufficient response to topical or UV-B therapy, or both; and . . .
