The Messenger for March, 1904, a periodical of more than ordinary literary and polemic merit, editorially handles the theory of Hutchinson and its application to the Catholic church. . . . The editorial chiefly takes issue with the statistics of Hutchinson adduced from countries under Catholic rules. In rebuttal the countries of South America and those of vegetarianism are instanced. The discussion published in the London Lancet is quoted and the negative result so far as the theory was concerned. In discussing Hutchinson's plea that the Protestant countries were free of leprosy because of the relegation of abstinences, the writer suggests that Continental countries, Catholic in practice, were also exempt from the disease except in sporadic groups of cases.
