We welcome the comments of Drs Shors and Weiss in response to our review. The findings of this group do not contradict what was reviewed in our article,1 but in fact add to the data regarding the relationship between cutaneous and ocular disease. The findings of Shors et al2 and Hemminki et al3 that persons with ocular melanoma (OM) are at increased risk for developing cutaneous melanoma (CM), but not the reverse, are quite interesting. The authors propose differing hypotheses regarding the etiology of this apparent discrepancy.2-3 However, we would agree with comments provided by Kricker et al4 regarding these findings—that the proposed lack of an increased risk of OM following CM is based on few cases collectively (10 OMs).
