Evidence of an Outbreak of Syphilis Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Rome

Outbreaks of infectious syphilis have occurred in several European and North American cities among men who have sex with men (MSWM) and heterosexuals, particularly among persons already aware of being infected with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). Most outbreaks occurred from 1998 to 2002 and among indigenous populations or resident foreigners. These outbreaks have led to an increase in the annual syphilis incidence in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, where disease occurrence had been progressively decreasing.1-2
In Italy, data from the national statutory infectious disease notification system have shown a progressive decrease in the occurrence of infectious syphilis, with only 351 cases in 2000.3 Since 1991, a similar trend has been reported by the Sentinel Surveillance System for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI),4 with only 95 cases reported in 2000.
