Question: Is chronic sun exposure associated with increasing survival in patients with cutaneous melanoma?
Design: Follow-up study of a cohort of melanoma cases originally enrolled in a case-control study in 1987-1989.
Setting: Population-based, case-control study on patients with melanoma in Connecticut, recruited through the Connecticut Tumor Registry.
Patients: This analysis was performed on 528 of 650 patients diagnosed as having invasive cutaneous melanoma between 1987 and 1989, after excluding patients with lymph node or organ metastases and patients with lentigo maligna melanoma that is always associated with solar elastosis. Patients were interviewed by trained nurses, and information was collected on demographics, phenotypic characteristics, location of the tumor, sun exposure history, self-examination and physician examination of skin, and skin . . .
