A Papule Arising in Irradiated Breast Tissue—Quiz Case

REPORT OF A CASE

A 51-year-old white woman presented to the dermatology outpatient clinic for a skin examination, during which a red papule was noted on her left breast. According to her medical history, the lesion had been present for 1 year and was asymptomatic. Her medical history was also notable for papillary carcinoma of the same breast 2 years earlier, which had been treated with breast conservation surgery and radiation therapy.

On physical examination, the lesion, which measured 4 mm in diameter (Figure 1), was firm, nontender, and erythematous. There was no clinical evidence of ulceration. The lesion was excised and stained with hematoxylin-eosin (Figure 2 and Figure 3).
