Academic Dermatology

It is encouraging that there is active research and lively discussion about the future of academic dermatology, as seen in the 4 articles in the July 2006 issue of the ARCHIVES.1-4 If there is no dialogue about this important topic, it could be easily overlooked in this age of exciting medical innovation.

In the study by my group, Wu et al,1 the total number of faculty members was found to be the most strongly correlated factor of that program's residents to enter academic dermatology.1 In the article by Reck et al,2 half of residents who were attracted to academics were found to lose interest owing to a lack of mentorship.
