Déjà vu is the feeling I had on reading "Academia Is the Life for Me, Im Sure"!1 Way back in that late 1960s, when I was applying for a dermatology residency, the conventional wisdom was that all the good programs were looking for academicians. So you did a research project in medical school and then told the interviewers that you were interested in a career in academic medicine. That was how the game was played.
I particularly remember interviewing at a prestigious program in the Northeast, where I was told that they trained mostly academic dermatologists. After the interview, I spoke with several of the current residents in the program and asked them what they planned to do after their residency. They all told me, "Oh, Im going into private practice."
