Expanding the Role of Topical Retinoids?

In this issue of the ARCHIVES, Thiboutot et al¹ and Leyden et al² provide the first rigorous clinical data on the suitability of topical retinoid monotherapy as maintenance treatment for acne vulgaris. For many dermatologists, the concept that topical retinoids alone may be effective in the maintenance phase of therapy for inflammatory acne may represent a substantial departure from their traditional thinking about the role of this class of medications in the treatment armamentarium. While establishing the clinical efficacy of topical retinoids in this setting presents new challenges to current concepts of acne trial design, expanding the use of this class of medications in acne maintenance therapy may help to significantly reduce antibiotic overuse.
