Diagnosis: Apocrine hidrocystoma of the penis.

MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS AND CLINICAL COURSE

Histologic examination revealed cystic spaces in the dermis that were lined by several layers of cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and evidence of decapitation of the cells lining the lumen. There were occasional papillary projections extending into these spaces. Surgical removal was performed, with no recurrence noted.

DISCUSSION

Apocrine hidrocystoma is a relatively common benign cystic tumor and is most often found on the face, especially at the external canthus of the eye. It has also been reported in other sites, including the shoulder, fingers, and perianal and periumbilical regions. However, it rarely occurs on the genitalia. A review of the literature revealed only 5 reports of apocrine hidrocystoma of the penis,^1-3 scrotum,⁴ and labia majora.⁵ The tumor, which presents as 1 or more nodules, is either translucent or the color of normal skin, with a cystic appearance, and ranges from a few millimeters to more than a centimeter in diameter. . . .
