Melanoma of the ungual apparatus represents less than 3% of all cases of cutaneous melanoma.1 To our knowledge, the medical literature reports only 6 cases of subungual melanomas in children,2 and we report the first case of a subungual melanoma in a child treated with slow Mohs surgery and reconstructive surgery with a free flap to restore function.
Report of a Case
An asymptomatic, 12-year-old Hispanic girl, skin phototype III, had a brown spot under the lunula of her right thumb first noticed at the age of 3 years. A year before her visit, the spot had extended eccentrically, become darker, and filled the entire nail plate.
