This month's edition of the Archives of Dermatology has several articles that focus on management and therapeutics for oral mucosal disease. These include a prospective study on the use of pentoxifylline for aphthous ulcers by Thornhill et al1; a retrospective study of medications used in the management of oral lichen planus (OLP) by Torti et al2; and an article by Passeron et al3 discussing a newer agent for control of OLP—pimecrolimus cream.
Oral ulceration is one of the most commonly encountered oral complaints, vexing to both physicians and patients, including those with the troublesome canker sores of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) as well as those suffering from the persistent ulceration of erosive OLP.
