INTRODUCTION
Approximately 62 000 people will be diagnosed as having melanoma, and approximately 7900 will die from the disease in the United States in 2006.1 Although sunscreen use by young people has increased, other sun protection practices have not changed, and sunburn rates remain alarmingly high.2 Against these findings, additional strategies that reinforce sun safety, such as legislating age restrictions for youth access to UV tanning beds, continue to gain momentum.
In 2003, our research group compared youth access laws governing indoor UV tanning and tobacco use in 6 nations.3 Since the last update,4 Connecticut, Kentucky, New Jersey, and New York have passed new laws regulating youth access to indoor UV tanning beds.
