Treatment of Hyperhidrosis With Oxybutynin

We read with great interest the study by Tupker et al.1 It is difficult to treat patients diagnosed as having generalized hyperhidrosis, and we agree that oxybutynin could serve as an effective treatment.
Report of a Case
A 24-year-old presented with generalized hyperhidrosis where blood levels of thyrotropin, catecholamines, and serotonin were normal; no treatment was effective in this patient. As a result of a hyperreflectory urine bladder, oxybutynin chloride (15 mg/d) was prescribed, and the hyperhidrosis disappeared after 2 weeks. Subsequent treatment was stopped because dry mouth caused the hyperhidrosis to relapse. A regimen of oxybutynin chloride at 10 mg/d allowed a complete remission without adverse effect, and no relapse was observed after 6 months.
Comment
