In a number of cases exposure to cold and a drenching preceded the beginning of the affection. In many instances the extremities became swollen and soon afterward lesions made their appearance. How much this depended upon injury is difficult to ascertain. In Bernhardt's case (Arch. F. Dermat. u. Syph., 1902, lxiii, p. 239) the sarcomatous process began after an attack of erysipelas. Whether this latter was preceded by injury is not recorded. Of the four cases of the present writer, two give a clear history of trauma.
