Pruritic Papules Limited to Tattooed Skin—Quiz Case

REPORT OF A CASE
A 29-year-old heavily tattooed man presented with a 6-week history of progressive pruritic papules and plaques restricted to indiscriminate tattooed areas. The patient was extensively and professionally tattooed in 1 color (black iron oxide or carbon) but denied any new tattoos within the last 10 years. His medical history was significant for chronic hepatitis C, for which he completed a 6-month course of pegylated interferon and ribavirin within the previous month. The onset of skin lesions occurred just prior to the completion of combination therapy. Findings of a review of systems were unremarkable.
Physical examination revealed multiple scattered erythematous papules and plaques appearing exclusively in tattooed skin (Figure 1). No lymphadenopathy was noted. Two punch biopsy specimens were obtained (Figure 2 and Figure 3).
