Lawrence Frank, MD, Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center passed away on December 28, 2002, after a long illness. Dr Frank had a long and distinguished career as a clinician, teacher, and clinical research leader. Dr Frank was instrumental in unifying 2 separate Divisions of Dermatology under the umbrella of the Department of Medicine at Downstate, paving the way for Dermatology to eventually become an independent department after his retirement. Dr Frank had a keen interest in inflammation of the skin and conducted clinical investigations in psoriasis and acne. He was one of the first to describe the beneficial effect of methotrexate in psoriasis while working closely with the Rheumatology group at Downstate. Under his leadership considerable investigation was conducted on the use of capillary microscopy in inflammatory skin disease and was conducted at Downstate principally by Drs Yehoshua Rapp and Franklin Glickman. Larry was a dedicated teacher and expert clinician who willingly transmitted his considerable knowledge to his students, residents, and junior faculty. He will be sorely missed by all.
