Despite the striking architectural asymmetry, melanocytes are mainly arranged in nests, are highly cohesive, and have no tendency to upward spread into the epidermis. Note also the clefts above nests of melanocytes in the left part of the lesion. Histopathologic diagnosis: atypical Spitz nevus (hematoxylin-eosin, original magnification x25).
