Herpes Zoster With Ocular Destruction. Presented by SILAS WALLK, MD, and JAMES MCNEESE, MD.

This 70-year-old Chinese man (Fig 1) complained of severe pain on the right side of the forehead and right eye of one year's duration. Examination revealed a macerated cornea covered with pus, the lid partially destroyed, and the skin of the right forehead and anterior scalp erythematous and pigmented. Discrete white scars occurred in the area. An evisceration of the right eye was performed in January 1969 and antibiotic therapy was begun.

He had had tuberculosis in the past. X-ray films of the chest showed bilateral apical fibrosis. Other laboratory tests were as follows: Serum protein, 4.4; alkaline phosphatase, 7.1; nonprotein nitrogen, 64; and stool benzidine, 4 +.

There has been recent weight loss and search for malignancy is continuing.
